Sterling silver cigarette case that honors a WWII air crew of the 8th Air Force, 95th Bomb Group and 334th Bomb Squadron, engraved with the name of their B-17G Flying Fortress bomber, «To Hell or Glory», along with the Aerial Gunner Wings insignia, the owner’s name, «C.F. The back of the case features a map of England, including Diss, where the missions began, as well as Europe and the mission targets: Duren, Frankfurt, Brunswick, Emden, Rouen, Schweinfurt, Regensburg, Calais, Augsburg, Berlin, Paris, Rostock, Dunkirk, St. Omar, Hamm, and Friedrichshafen. Inside, an engraved roll call crew list honors the crew members: Pilot F.J. Cunningham, Co-Pilot A.V. Bowden, Navigator Edward J. Bartlett, Bombardier Isidore Markowitz, Engineer Jessie V. Pace, Radio Operator Willard S. Cox, Ball Turret Gunner Cleo F. Stevens, Right Wing Gunner Herbert L. Cloutier, Left Wing Gunner Oscar F. Krummel, and Tail Gunner Gilbert C. Eagle.

The crew flew missions with the B-17 Flying Fortress bombers “To Hell or Glory” (42-38123), “Mirandy” (42-31992) and finally “Gen'ril Oop” (42-31993) - also on 24th April 1944 when the crew landed the bomber in Dubendorf after a mission over Friedrichshafen. Even before the crew reached Friedrichshafen, their aircraft was heavily damaged. After both engines 1 and 2 failed, the pilots had to leave the formation and head towards Switzerland. On September 8, 1945, the aircraft was flown back to Burtonwood.

Case – Jerrican

Handmade metal cigarette case in the exact shape of a U.S. Jerry Can gas tank with all details engraved and a spring mechanism to open the case by pressing a small button on the front.

U.S. Jerry Cans were made of steel and painted green during the Second World War. A large «G» for Gasoline was embossed on the top of both sides. Below the two crossed lines, the letters «U.S.A.» were stamped into the steel. On the opposite side, the letters «Q.M.C.» for Quarter Master Corps were stamped into the metal. It is estimated that around 21 million Allied gas cans were produced. They were used in all theaters of war, and the role they played in the Allied victory was acknowledged by President Roosevelt in November 1944 when he declared: «Without these cans it would have been impossible for our armies to have fought their way through France at that speed».

Bakelite cigarette case with various engravings: The insignia of the 36th Infantry Division, which belonged to the U.S. Seventh Army, and a scene with the cathedral, combined with the Ulm Sparrow, both landmarks of Ulm, and «Souvenir of ULM» next to it.

During World War II, the US forces involved in the capture of Ulm in Germany were primarily from the U.S. Seventh Army. One of the key units that was involved in the operations around Ulm in late April 1945 was the 36th Infantry Division, which was also part of the larger effort by the 7th Army to advance through southern Germany, crossing the Danube river and capturing key cities to weaken the remaining German resistance as the war in Europe drew to a close.

Bakelite cigarette case with various engravings: «516 M.P.», the insignia of the U.S. Seventh Army and a scene with a mountain and a sun and «Hohenstaufen» as well as «Germany» underneath.

The 516th Military Police Service Company is most commonly associated with the Third Army, but it is plausible that it had interactions or operational connections with the Seventh Army, especially in complex military operations. The 3rd and the 36th Infantry Division were part of the U.S. Seventh Army and were involved in operations in southern Germany, capturing numerous regions and towns. Hohenstaufen is a mountain in Germany, located in the Swabian Jura region, near the town of Göppingen. During World War II, it was part of the broader region in which U.S. forces operated during their advance into Germany.
