The 38th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron (38th ARRS) provided combat search-and-rescue support throughout the Vietnam War, operating a network of detachments across South Vietnam. In 1967, Detachment 11, based at Tuy Hoa Air Base, operated two Kaman HH-43B/F «Pedro» rescue helicopters, each typically crewed by a pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer, and pararescueman (PJ), giving the detachment an operational flying strength of approximately eight aircrew, supported by maintenance and ground personnel.
