Royal Australian Regiment – 6th Battalion

The 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6 RAR) served with distinction during the Vietnam War as part of the 1st Australian Task Force (1 ATF). During 1966–1967, the battalion, numbering approximately 800 officers and men, was based at Nui Dat in Phước Tuy Province, where it conducted patrols, ambushes, search-and-destroy operations, and counter-insurgency missions against Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army forces. On 18 August 1966, 6 RAR fought the Battle of Long Tan, one of Australia's most celebrated engagements of the Vietnam War, earning a lasting reputation for discipline, courage, and combat effectiveness. The battalion completed its first operational tour in June 1967 before returning to Vietnam for a second tour in 1969–1970.
