U.S. 1st Marine Division 1/5 – «The Butchers»

Vietnam Zippo hand engraved lighter with the front engraved «CPL KIRK / USMC / TO REALLY LIVE YOU MUST NEARLY DIE / VIETNAM / 1966–1967», a personal combat era inscription combining rank, branch of service, tour dates, and a philosophical motto reflecting the fatalism and intensity of front line Marine service during the Vietnam War. The reverse is engraved «GRUNT B1/5 / BUTCHER BN / CAP K-3», identifying a Marine infantryman.

In 1966–1967, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines operated as a rifle company with the 1st Marine Division in I Corps Tactical Zone, primarily in Quảng Nam Province near Da Nang. The battalion conducted sustained search-and-destroy operations, ambush patrols, and Combined Action Program deployments in contested areas such as the Que Son Valley and the An Hoa basin, where Marines engaged Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army forces in frequent small-unit combat. Known by the longstanding nickname “The Butchers,” 1/5 earned its reputation during this period of continuous ground fighting that preceded the Tet Offensive and defined some of the division’s hardest infantry operations of the war.
