U.S. 1st Marine Division 1/7 – «Suicide Charlie»

In 1966–1967, Charlie Company, operated as a rifle company with the 1st Marine Division in I Corps, primarily in Quảng Nam Province near Da Nang. The unit conducted continuous search-and-destroy operations, ambush patrols, and security missions in heavily contested areas such as the Que Son Valley and surrounding lowlands, where Marines faced entrenched Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces. Known for aggressive tactics and frequent combat contact, «Suicide Charlie» earned its reputation during this period of intense ground fighting that preceded the Tet Offensive and defined some of the division’s hardest infantry operations of the war.


Zippo hand engraved lighter with the front engraved «THE SHADOW OF DEATH WE WILL FEAR NO EVIL FOR WE ARE THE MEANEST MAN IN THAT VALLEY», a combat motto derived from Psalm 23 and widely associated with Marine infantry units in Vietnam. The reverse is engraved «SUICIDE CHARLIE / 1ST BATTALION / 7TH MARINES / VIET-NAM 1966–67», identifying Charlie Company, 1/7 Marines, 1st Marine Division.
