U.S. Navy «U.S.S. America» – «Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club»

The USS America (CVA-66), a Kitty Hawk-class attack aircraft carrier, made her first Vietnam deployment in 1968, serving with Task Force 77 on Yankee Station in the Gulf of Tonkin. During four combat line periods between May and October 1968, the carrier's embarked air wing flew thousands of strike, interdiction, close air support, and combat air patrol missions against targets throughout North Vietnam. Aircraft from USS America participated in Operation Rolling Thunder, attacking transportation networks, bridges, supply depots, and military installations while also providing fleet air defense. During this deployment, the carrier earned the Navy Unit Commendation for the exceptional performance of the ship and Carrier Air Wing Six in combat operations.
