4144th QM Sv Co– Donald W. St. John

Donald W. St. John of Rochester, New York, entered U.S. Army service on 20 January 1943. By May 1944 he was serving as a Private First Class with the 4144th Quartermaster Service Company in England during the final preparations for Operation Overlord. A Morning Report dated 16 May 1944 lists St. John among personnel ordered to a «secret destination», reflecting the strict security measures imposed on troops designated for the forthcoming invasion. On 6 June 1944, St. John landed in Normandy with the 4144th Quartermaster Service Company, a unit credited with participation in the assault landings of Operation Overlord. Following the invasion, Quartermaster units played an essential role in maintaining the flow of supplies and equipment from the Normandy beachheads into France and later across Western Europe.
