58th Ordnance Bomb Disposal Squad – Irving M. Benson

Irving M. Benson (32412098) served with the 58th Ordnance Bomb Disposal Squad at Bizerte, Tunisia, in February 1944. Earlier, in October 1943, he was wounded in Italy by bomb fragments during an aerial bombing attack while serving with the Ordnance Branch and remained hospitalized following treatment for his injuries. The squad served in the Mediterranean Theater, where its personnel operated under hazardous conditions clearing unexploded bombs and ammunition from airfields, ports, supply depots and former combat zones. Following the Allied victory in North Africa, Tunisia became a major Allied staging area for operations against Sicily and mainland Italy, making Bomb Disposal units an essential part of Allied military operations.
