China – Shanghai
Following Japan's surrender in August 1945, Shanghai became one of the principal centers of the American occupation effort in China. U.S. Army and Navy personnel were deployed to the city to supervise the surrender of Japanese forces, repatriate prisoners of war and civilians, assist in restoring order, and support the Nationalist Chinese government during the early stages of the renewed Chinese Civil War. Thousands of American servicemen passed through Shanghai in 1945 and 1946 before the gradual withdrawal of U.S. forces.
