James Lewis Day – Medal of Honor

Major General James Lewis Day (0-56003) was a U.S. Marine Corps officer who served during WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. During WWII he served with the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Marines, participating in combat operations in the Marshall Islands, Guam and Okinawa. As part of the 6th Marine Division, one of the principal assault formations during the Battle of Okinawa, Day fought in some of the campaign's fiercest engagements, including the bitter struggle for Sugar Loaf Hill. For extraordinary heroism displayed during the Okinawa campaign he was later awarded the Medal of Honor.
