U.S. 1st Infantry Division – «The Big Red One»

The U.S. 1st Infantry Division ("The Big Red One") is the oldest continuously serving division of the United States Army. During WWII, the division fought in North Africa and Sicily before taking part in the Normandy invasion on 6 June 1944. Landing on Omaha Beach, it played a crucial role in establishing the Allied beachhead in France and subsequently participated in the campaigns across Western Europe. By the end of the war, the division had advanced into Germany and western Czechoslovakia.
