U.S. 29th Infantry Division – D-Day
After months of preparation in England for Operation Overlord, the U.S. 29th Infantry Division took part in the first wave of the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944. Elements of the division, including the 115th and 116th Infantry Regiments, assaulted Omaha Beach under heavy German fire and suffered severe casualties during the opening hours of the invasion. Following the successful establishment of the beachhead, the division fought throughout the Normandy Campaign, including the bitter struggle for Saint-Lô, before advancing across France and into Germany. In the final months of the war, the division participated in operations along the Roer River and the drive into the heart of Germany.
