U.S. 4th Infantry Division – «Ivy»
Sigmund J. Nalewjka (32044927) served with Company F, 12th Infantry Regiment, U.S. 4th Infantry Division, during WWII. Wounded in action in France on 10 June 1944 during the Normandy Campaign, he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his wartime service. The U.S. 4th Infantry Division, known by its nickname «Ivy», landed on Utah Beach on 6 June 1944 and played a major role in the Allied campaign in Western Europe. Following the Normandy landings, the division advanced through France, participated in the capture of Cherbourg and the breakout at Saint-Lô, and later fought in the Huertgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge before crossing the Rhine and advancing into Germany during the final months of the war.
Worn black crackle Zippo engraved with the insignia of the U.S. 4th Infantry Division and the date «June 6 44» on the front. Accompanied by its original post-war Zippo return box from 1950 following factory repair, still bearing the address of Sigmund J. Nalewjka, 1219 Mader St., Schenectady 8, New York.
