The owner of this lighter served with the 90th Infantry Division, known by its wartime nickname «Tough Ombres». The division landed in Normandy via Utah Beach between 8 and 10 June 1944 during Operation Overlord, entered combat in the Carentan sector, and advanced across northern France into Belgium as Allied forces pushed eastward. In the final phase of the European campaign, elements of the division participated in the liberation of the Flossenbürg concentration camp in April 1945. The engraved locations correspond to the documented route of the division from the Normandy landings through France and Belgium toward Germany.
Nickel plated Zippo engraved with campaign locations and dates including «GRAND CAMP LES BAINS», «GRANDVILLE», «UTAH BEACH», «CARENTAN», «ROUEN», «LE HAVRE», «LIEGE», «ANTWERP», «BRUXELLES» and «REIMS». The lid is engraved «BRUCE W. STENBERG” above «NORMANDY BEACH» and «JUNE 10 1944». The surfaces are framed by decorative border engraving.
